Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony

2008 Beijing Olympic Torch

With 11,000 athletes, 15,000 performers, 30,000 fireworks, and 91,000 in attendance, Beijing opens the 2008 Olympics in grand style. The huge production was an incredible display of technology and engineering on a massive scale with minute precision. It was the largest and most expensive opening ceremony to date.

The ceremony highlighted rich Chinese history, tradition, and arts, and included symbolism of a new, more open China.

I particularly enjoyed the massive drum and light show. It was coordinated to perfection, which must have been some task considering the scope of the show.

I was mesmerized by the 29 fireworks in the shape of giant footsteps in the sky that lead from Tiennamen Square to the Olympic Stadium, symbolizing the 29th modern Olympics. What was so incredible about this display was the fact that it took place on a gigantic, almost unbelievable scale, encompassing what appeared to be many city blocks.

I also enjoyed the 56 children singing, dressed in traditional clothing, representing the 56 Chinese ethnic groups.

When the Chinese athletes were introduced, I was touched by the young child who walked alongside the flag bearer, Yao Ming. He is a survivor of the China earthquake.

Finally, I was blown away by the way the torch was lit. When the torch relay reached Li Ning, a Chinese sports icon, he was suddenly lifted into the air to the top of the stadium, where he ran around the inside of the top of the stadium until he reached the torch. It was a magical moment as he made his way around the stadium.

China made a bold statement with the opening ceremony and they pulled it off in impressive style. It was simply spectacular!
