MARK SPITZ
MUNICH OLYMPIC SOUVENIRS

Then: Mark Spitz was the swimmer with the mustache who made huge waves at the 1972 Olympic games in Munich, Germany, when he broke the record for the most Gold Medals won in any single Olympic Games, taking home 7 of them. Not only did he win a Gold Medal in all 7 individual events he entered, but he also set a new World record in each of those events, as well. He remains the only Olympian to accomplish this. In his Olympic career, Mark Spitz won 9 Gold Medals, 1 Silver Medal, and 1 Bronze Medal. He also set 33 World records in his swimming career.

Now: Mark Spitz retired from swimming after the Munich games and attempted a show business career. He made appearances on The Tonight Showwith Johnny Carson, TheSonny & Cher Comedy Hour, and on the television series, Emergency, as paramedic, Pete Barlow. He was considered for the honor of being an Oscars host and there was even talk about him becoming the next James Bond. His showbiz career didn't last very long, as he discovered he wasn't very comfortable on camera. At age 41, Mark Spitz attempted an Olympic comeback as he tried to qualify for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Even though his times were nearly as good as (or in some cases even better than) his gold medal winning times from 20 years earlier, he failed to qualify. More recently Mark narrated a Quentin Tarantino documentary and appeared in a cameo role in a television commercial with Amanda Beard. Mark has been married to his wife, Suzy, since 1973 and they have 2 sons together. Today, Mark is self-employed as a corporate spokesperson and a motivational speaker.
